ORIGINAL VERSION

ORIGINAL MOVIE POSTER

I am really excited that this is my very first print. Not only am I pleased with the poster itself and the story behind it, but it holds special significance because it was my son, Finley, who marked my face with the temporary tattoo pen.

I gave him instructions of "cover my face in the number 100, with other trash words like 'plog' 'single use plastic' and 'litter'"

MOVIE POSTERS WITH A TWIST

The story behind the movie posters I make is both simple and organically started.
During the pandemic I noticed a lot of people making 'living' versions of paintings and movie posters. It seemed like a lot of fun, so I joined in and made one myself; Pulp Fiction on 1st June 2020.

The idea of the plogging twist was a mix of how I liked to get creative and humorous in my plogging posts and also inspired to a large extent by the humour of TPC Asburn (this is the reason why I will never remake Dirty Dancing - his post was too influential to me on my poster journey).

Over time the idea of the posters has matured, and I try and adhere to certain rules;
-
No A.I. or fake elements - all parts of the poster are recreated by me. By hand. The most I will do if adding some filters or cutting out parts of an image. All the text you see is recreated by hand.
-
Trash collected on the day - I do not reuse trash image I have or trash I have saved. I like to go out and get fresh trash for the poster. There are some excpetions to this where I have a poster that requires a lot of specific trash
-
Made by me - I put my poor editing skills to the test - YouTube is my friend
-
Photos taken in situ - I do not take the trash to a studio - I will take photos usually outside

All of this means that I sacrifice true replication for authenticity. This is important to me. I have come to love the elements in my poster that I was not happy with when I made it.
These errors and imperfections add to the story behind the poster.
It takes a lot of time to make each one (around 8hrs) - but I love doing each one!

WHY?

Originally the posters had a clear and deliberate intent; to reach new people with my Instagram account. People outside of my eco bubble.
To get them to follow me and hopefully inspire them to take action themselves.

But as the years went on, the true benefit changed; to help keep people inside the bubble and recharge their enthusiasm.
So many accounts about trash and plogging have been created by people keen on raising awareness. But so many of them become disheartened by the lack of engagement that they give up.
I want my posters to put a smile on their faces.
To give the energy to continue and not give up.

I want them to think; "he doesn't give up, so I won't either!"

LIMITED SERIES PRINTS

As I made these more and more people said; "you sure print these out", "you need to have an exhibit!"

This is my first attempt to do that. Inspired by Zandvoort Museum's Plastic Op Drift exhibition and that they consider my trash outfits worthy to stand beside some incredible artists, I have desided to take a plunge.

The original images need to be reworked a bit for me to be happy with them in their print form, but I am preserving as much of the original as possible (again, this means that what it lacks in quality it makes up for its connection to the original). The main changes will be the text used in the 'poster credits'. For those I have made relevant to the reason for the print and the message of the original text.

The limited series print is in a run of only 30.

THE MAKING OF THE POSTER
Date: July 17, 2021
Poster number 60 in the posters with a plogging twist on Instagram.

I was doing a Jim Carey series at the time (the previous week I had done Ace Ventura) and came across this movie poster. I didn't know the film but the poster.. wow! perfect!

Later that year (September) I was planning on doing a continuous 100km plog to celebrate my tenth anniversary as a plogger, so immediately I thought I could switch the number 23 to the number 100 and make a poster specific for the build up towards that event.

And.. wow, such an impactful poster to recreate.

I went out and got a temporary tattoo pen (I was scared I might need to use a permanent marker pen!), and asked my son to cover it in the number 100.
We added extra text in there like Single Use Plastic, Litter, Plog etc.

He then helped me take the photo.

But while there is a trash theme (in this case celebrating the 100km plog), it wasn't really featuring any trash. So i still needed to go an plog for the day and decided to go out looking like this.

It was a hot day and I was so scared it would run under the sweat or that I would wipe it off by mistake.
But, it was a success and loved going out and doing it.

As a plogger the reactions you get fall into several types
-
Ashamed - some people refuse to look at you - Is it because they are ashamed?
-
Directly look - some people directly look at you and often give works of encouragement
-
Secretly look - some people want to look but wait until it is safe to look without you noticing them looking
It was the same with the tattoo'd face. Brilliant reactions in all three camps.. but I think some of them were definitely too scared to look instead of embarrassed.

REMASTERED EDITION

To make the remaster edition I luckily had an original version of the photo (albeit edited) - I used that as the basis to the new REMASTERED edition.

I will see if I can dig out the original photo which was just taken in daylight

I remade all the text elements (I am now using Affinity Designer and Photo for editing)
The text in the credit was originally

"WAYEOFLIFE presents ANOTHER JIM CARREY movie poster with a PLOGGING THEME. NUMBER 100. why 100? well because I am CELEBRATING 10yrs of PLOGGING by RUNNING 100km and PICKING UP TRASH the ENTIRE WAY. SOUNDS CRAZY, huh? WELL, when you consider I am HAPPY to COVER my FACE in INK then you know I I have a BIT of the CARREY CRAZY in ME! But DO I have ENOUGH CARREY CRAZY to MAKE it?"

For the remastered poster this has been changed to still reference the original intent about mentioning the 100km plog, but it now also talks about the fact that I am in my first ever art/trash exhibition in the Zandvoorts Museum. As well as being my first ever print!

I hope you have found this story behind the poster interesting.
